Providence Health & Services Bioinformatics Scientist 1 in Portland, Oregon
Providence is calling a Bioinformatics Scientist 1 (1.0 FTE, Days) to Providence Office Park in Portland, OR.
In this position you will:
Analyzes large molecular datasets such as raw microarray data, genomic sequence data and proteomics data for clinical purposes.
Works with the Regional Medical Director, Associate Directors, Manager and Bioinformatics Scientists for Molecular Genomics Laboratory to identify needs, test third-party software, develop or modify new software applications and web-based bioinformatics tools and create novel computational approaches and analytical tools as needed.
Applies bioinformatics and molecular genetics computation techniques in collaboration with the physicians, molecular scientists and technologists in the Molecular Genomics laboratory to validate gene sequence results and deliver reliable and accurately annotated mutation analysis reports with personalized treatment recommendations for clinical use by oncologists and pathologists.
Utilizes programs to collect, store, manage, analyze and report biological sequencing data for use in activities such as gene expression profiling, genome annotation, and structural bioinformatics in conjunction with the Molecular and Genomic Testing Medical Director.
Participates in developing policies and procedures for the scientific, technical development, clinical evaluation, and implementation of bioinformatics methods and activities which compliment, and expand the services of the Regional Laboratories for the Oregon Region.
Assures that technical decisions are made with regard to patient care and overall testing and operational issues.
Supports the activities of the Regional Medical Director and Manager for Molecular Genomics Laboratory as necessary for the purpose of evaluating new products, new methods and clinical trials and to achieve budgeted expense and revenue targets.
Engages in collaborative research projects and support scientific activities of Cancer Research when appropriate.
Reviews current Molecular Diagnostic and Pathology literature regarding bioinformatics and oncology support.
Required qualifications for this position include:
Masters’ degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, computer Science or Biology.
2 years of experience related to bioinformatics work in a clinical laboratory or experience in academia, biotechnology, or other healthcare field.
2 years computational experience.
Must be proficient in a scripting language (e.g. Python/Perl/Ruby) and *nix environments.
