THE ROLE

The Chief Executive (CE) will be a well-respected, experienced healthcare executive who is committed to advancing the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (PSVMC) ministry. The CE will ensure continued growth, innovation, and delivery of exceptional care. Working collaboratively with the Oregon Executive Council, community ministry board, medical staff and PSVMC executive management team, the incumbent will articulate a strategic vision that differentiates PSVMC in a competitive and changing marketplace. They will be accountable for continued organizational growth, operating results, quality and advocacy for patients, families, physicians, and employees. The leader will promote a culture in line with PSVMC Center’s mission, vision, and values. The CE will exhibit servant leadership and compassion for the workforce. They will work to strengthen physician engagement and to promote employee engagement and community relations. The incumbent will provide leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality, patient-centered, cost-effective healthcare consistent with the organizational mission, vision, and goals, and in accordance with the healthcare needs of the communities served. In addition to this position’s primary focus as the CE of PSVMC, this individual will be a senior leader within the larger Providence Oregon service area.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with hospital, Oregon Executive Council, and ministry leadership to promote understanding, communication, and integration of mission, vision, and values, while building a compelling vision for the ministry.

  • Lead ministry efforts in execution of strategic goals as defined by local and or/service area goals and initiatives while recognizing the larger context of health system challenges and needs and leading ministry in support of common goals.

  • Establish and collaboratively lead systems and controls to achieve effective, efficient operations, information and support, recruitment and retention of staff, and conservation of physical and financial assets.

  • Work collaboratively with physicians and medical groups to develop mutually beneficial relationships that support local and/or service area initiatives while assisting medical staffs to adapt and embrace marketplace changes.

  • Build accountability around ongoing quality and service strategies for clinical effectiveness and high-quality patient centered care.

  • Create a culture of continuous growth and improvement, to enhance the focus on service and quality improvement, and to meet compliance and safety standards.

  • Lead and be accountable for efforts around customer satisfaction (physician, employee, community, and patient), developing, supporting, continuously measuring, and improving programs to generate and sustain high levels of satisfaction by all groups.

  • Serve as a senior leader, ensuring the delivery of compassionate and high-quality patient care through continual assessment and management of programs, systems, processes, resources, and outcomes, establishing lines of authority for planning, management, operations, and evaluation at every service level, within the context of the mission and vision, to meet the needs of patients.

  • Ensure the achievement of financial targets while actively seeking revenue enhancement and/or cost-reduction strategies, balancing mission, and financial performance.

  • Provide for hospital compliance with applicable law and regulation and oversee the review and prompt response to reports and recommendations from planning, regulatory and inspecting agencies.

  • Create healthy communities and promote health improvement through proactively pursuing relationships and collaborating in efforts to improve the quality of life in the local community.

  • Identify opportunities, market needs, and industry trends while maintaining flexibility to proactively respond to shifting opportunities and threats, coordinating efforts within applicable local/service area strategy.

  • Maximize talent by providing counsel, leadership, guidance, and direction and assist in the development of an organizational culture appropriate to support the mission of Providence. Develop, coach, and mentor executive team in appropriate manner for individual and group needs to fulfill leadership roles and responsibilities while driving for results and fulfilling applicable succession strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • A Master’s Degree in Health or Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.

Experience:

At least ten years of significant leadership experience in a health care delivery organization is required. The Chief Executive should have personal values compatible with those of Providence and be comfortable administering a Catholic-sponsored organization. In addition, the following:

  • Be a strong executive with considerable experience and background in operations.

  • Possesses significant health system experience in an environment that is comparable to Oregon and has a commitment to the system model.

  • Possesses strong business skills, including finance, negotiation, and business planning.

  • Demonstrates a track record of success in working with physicians, and a genuine attitude of respect for them.

  • Strong strategic thinker.

  • Catholic healthcare experience preferred.
