Providence Health & Services Endoscopy Technician in Portland, Oregon

We are seeking a Endoscopy Technician - Endoscopy that will be responsible for the effective cleaning, inspection, maintenance, proper disinfection, sterilization, and distribution of instrumentation and equipment. Works collaboratively with other departments to ensure all supplies, instrumentation and equipment are available for cases as well as other procedures requiring Endoscopy support.

Assists in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the activities occurring at the Endoscopy unit within the Certified Nursing Assistant scope of practice. Performs basic nursing functions and other duties under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Participate in the admission, care, transports and discharge of patients

  • Assist with patient care as directed by the RN by:

  • Answering call light

  • Performing pre and post-procedure direct patient care (vital signs, chemsticks)

  • Maintaining bedside intake and output

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of principles of infection control

  • Report all observations concerning patients to a registered nurse

  • Accept telephone laboratory results and transcribes to appropriate form, reporting information

  • Professional Development:

  • Maintain and enhance professional expertise through continuing education

  • Participate in training of staff and students

  • Maintain an orderly, clean, and safe environment

  • Prepare charts for new patients and maintains the upkeep of these charts; i.e. dates, addressograph, adding additional sheets, order of forms and placement of forms

  • Demonstrate good Stewardship:

  • Care for instrumentation and patient care equipment throughout cleaning and/or sterilization process

  • Organize and prioritize work assignments in an efficient and cost-effective manner

  • Order and pick up special equipment from appropriate departments

  • Assist with upkeep of patient charge items/chart audits

  • Receive and appropriately processes telephone messages

  • Prepare daily patient and nurse assignment boards

  • Move and clean equipment

  • Accountability:

  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings

  • Participate in department projects or committees

  • Utilize downtime productively

  • Is knowledgeable of disaster and fire plans, Code 99, Code 30 procedures and implements as necessary

  • Complete mandatory education requirements:

  • CPR, fire safety, electrical safety, infection control, disaster plan, and others as designated by the department

  • Transport specimens to the lab when necessary

  • Supplies: Ordering, Storage, Distribution:

  • Ensure proper storage of instrumentation, supplies and equipment following established guidelines

  • Utilize instrument and supply tracking effectively to manage inventory

  • Review schedule and anticipates needs

  • Prepare procedure rooms and carts for completeness

  • Respond promptly to anticipated and unanticipated case needs

  • Review, maintain, and organize adequate inventory including special order items

  • Sterilization:

  • Ensure appropriate disinfection/sterilization method

  • Ensure proper parameters for sterilization

  • Conduct quality control measures to ensure parameters are met

  • Take appropriate follow-up action when parameters aren’t met

  • Troubleshoot equipment to ensure proper functioning

  • Complete documentation

  • Instrumentation Decontamination:

  • Anticipate workload and coordinates with staff and physicians

  • Prioritize instrumentation upon arrival ensuring proper initial care

  • Disassemble and reassemble instruments correctly when appropriate

  • Inspect instruments and tests for proper function

  • Initiate repair for any malfunctioning instrumentation

  • Advise and inform professional staff and services representatives about equipment utilization and maintenance concerns

  • Select appropriate cleaning and disinfection method and ensures adequate cleaning of instrumentation

  • Complete documentation.

  • Correctly identify and organize instrumentation in preparation for assembly

  • Inspect instruments to ensure proper cleaning and instrument function

  • Take initiative to follow-up on identified issues

  • Assemble instrumentation according to pre-established manufacturer and department guidelines

  • Select appropriate disinfection process

  • Support professional staff by performing second assistant role for ERCP/stent procedures and room set ups

  • Support professional staff by performing M2A procedure set-up, download and record maintenance

  • Teamwork:

  • Demonstrate commitment to teamwork by contributing to team to meet department needs

  • Complete all assigned tasks and communicates as such

  • Carry fair share of workload

  • Coordinate activities with other members of the health care team

  • Willingly share knowledge and expertise

  • Conflict Resolution:

  • Contribute to resolving conflict. Utilizes problem-solving skills to promote a positive work environment

  • Seek assistance to resolve conflict when needed

  • Give and receive constructive feedback


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Experience using various computer software programs

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • One (1) year of Experience as a GI Tech, -OR- Certification as a CNA 2 in the State of Oregon

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Endoscopy/surgical tech/acute CNA experience in hospital setting
