We are seeking a Forensic Nurse Examiner - Sane Program that will provide timely, compassionate care to patients seeking medical-forensic exams in accordance with established protocols. This will include completing a medical-forensic exam, providing prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, and completing referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up. The FNE will also collaborate with community partners including advocacy agencies, law enforcement, prosecutors, and child and vulnerable adult protection agencies where applicable.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Perform medical forensic exams as a Forensic Nurse Examiner:

  • Work independently as an FNE to provide forensic medical exams to victims of physical or sexual assault

  • Identify and document injuries accurately with the support of forensic photography

  • Conduct interview utilizing age appropriate methods while demonstrating cultural competency

  • Complete an age appropriate nursing assessment and coordinate care delivery

  • Identify potential forensic evidence, collect, package, and store evidence according to protocol

  • Document chain of custody

  • Proficiency in speculum examination, assessment of anogenital injury, and specimen collection

  • Communicate with appropriate law enforcement agency

  • Ensure collaboration with appropriate advocacy agency

  • Identify the need for forensic toxicology assay and collect specimens according to established protocols

  • Document and secure samples appropriately

  • Follow documentation protocols, utilizing appropriate report forms and electronic medical record

  • Assist patient with SAVE fund application process

  • Administration of medications per established protocols

  • Provide orientation and training to new FNEs:

  • Precept new FNEs

  • Review paperwork, policies and protocols with new FNEs

  • Assist FNE supervisor:

  • Attend SART meetings and other SANE certification renewal activities as directed

  • Participate in peer review process

  • Schedule appropriate follow-up appointments:

  • Collaborate with HIV pharmacotherapy clinic when applicable

  • Ensure follow-up with appropriate medical and psychological services as needed

  • Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, medical personnel, patients and families:

  • Demonstrate communication and behaviors in accordance with Providence mission and values

  • Resolve conflicts appropriately

  • Communicate and work collaboratively with patient care teams

  • Work collaboratively with CPS and law enforcement:

  • Receive and process requests for information from CPS and law enforcement

  • Release evidence to appropriate law enforcement agency per established protocols

  • Mandatory reporter:

  • Complete a mandatory report to Child Protection Services, Adult Protection Services, and/or law enforcement within 24 hours and documents according to protocol

  • Provide testimony:

  • Respond to subpoena request in a timely manner, participate in pre-trial preparatory and judicial interviews and/or depositions, and document interactions appropriately

  • Maintain confidentiality of records or medical center information at all times

  • Confidential information & conversations are secured from general public access

  • Ensure all faxes and other communications adhere to federal regulations

  • Maintain full knowledge of HIPAA regulations


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Coursework/Training: Forty (40) hour Adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training

  • RN license in State of Oregon

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

  • SANE-A -OR- SANE -OR- Certification

  • Two (2) years of direct patient care as a Nurse

  • One (1) year direct patient care as a SANE -OR- Forensic Nurse Examiner
