We are seeking a Technical Laboratory Assistant 4 - Micro Molecular Lab who will be responsible for ensuring that technical licensed staff have the ability to work at the highest level of their licensure by performing all essential duties within the technical departments that do not require licensure to perform. The Technical Lab Assistant 4 is responsible for the accurate and timely application of a variety of biomedical laboratory techniques including pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical specimen analysis and/or disbursement of laboratory data and patient results. The incumbent monitors and maintains inventory supplies, maintains workflow and communication, and provides clerical assistance to the department. The incumbent may also be responsible for a variety of instrumentation maintenance and general quality control checks for the department. The incumbent must maintain up-to-date knowledge of and competency with numerous Federal, State and other regulatory body compliance and safety regulations. Complexity of the job is evidenced by the performance of multiple tasks and use of computer applications. The incumbent is expected to possess an understanding of the PH&S and the Oregon Region Laboratory goals and strategies.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Demonstrate competency in compliance by carrying out personal responsibilities required by the PH&S Laboratory Compliance Plan, including annual training
Maintain knowledge of numerous complex dynamic compliance requirements
Ensure compliance is met with various Federal, State and other regulatory bodies which includes, but is not limited to CMS, CAP, TJC, CLIA, EMTALA, COBRA and HIPPA
Be responsible for all work that does not require license or certification: enabling licensed staff to work at the top of license
Independently perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on laboratory instruments as assigned by supervisor
Be responsible for execution of established quality control procedures on analytical equipment, reagents, media and products with appropriate documentation
Be responsible to accurately perform analytical procedures and/or patient testing as assigned according to policy and procedure
Act as a resource for specimen collection and handling requirements, laboratory procedures and hospital protocols
Accurately perform advanced specimen processing functions, which may include: preparation of slides, stains, solutions; media and culture set up; pre-analytical instrument setup, opening/weighing human organs; assisting at autopsies, etc.
Perform and document scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on laboratory instrumentation as assigned
Accurately perform and document analytical procedures and patient testing as assigned according to state and federal regulations
Independently apply computer skills to access appropriate HIS/LIS information
Demonstrate enhanced experience in the use of lab-specific software and desktop software such as Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.
Independently identifies and resolves progressively complex discrepancies and specimen integrity issues and is able to troubleshoot, resolve and document variances
Utilize all computer programs properly and effectively
Verify patient information (full legal name, spelling and date of birth) and accurately inputs all required information into the STAR Patient Care system assigning a medical record number using correct search procedures
Enter physician orders as appropriate for patient services
Document and accurately receive, processes and distribute specimens to assure proper preservation of sample and timely analysis and reporting of results
Exhibit excellent telephone etiquette and Service Excellence skills, utilizing key words at key times
Effectively instruct and train new employees or students
Perform specimen collection
Promptly and accurately perform quality control procedures with appropriate documentation
Initiate and document corrective action when taken
Initiate written variances (including self-reporting) to ensure continuous quality improvement
Identify, analyze and resolve complex technical and procedural variances
Provide succinct situations summaries of evolving situations, problems and solutions
Participate in department QA projects as requested or required
Ensure all quality control procedures are performed prior to patient testing as appropriate
Complete assigned tasks, meeting section turn-around-times
Work inter-departmentally and intra-departmentally to ensure laboratory goals are met
Provide team members and other lab staff with verbal and written in-services pertinent to the work group
Understand the principles of quality improvement, efficiency and Service Excellence
Understand and supports departmental goals
Respond to technical questions with accurate and complete information and refers questions appropriately
Adhere to departmental policies and procedures
Demonstrate positive interactions with public and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with fellow caregivers and other departments so that productivity and positive caregiver relations are maximized
Assist in monitoring services for quality and timeliness
Required qualifications for this position includes:
High School Diploma -OR- GED
Four (4) years college education
Courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology -OR- Verifiable experience which includes proficiency in moderately complex testing
Phlebotomy will be needed in float pool and some ministries
Five (5) years industry related experience -OR- Demonstrated high level of performance as a Lab Assistant 2 -OR- Lab Assistant 3 within providence including competency in lab automation and complex specimen management (for Clinical Laboratory only)
Demonstrated outstanding Service Excellence experience
Clerical or client service experience
Knowledge of specimen handling and collection requirements, general laboratory workflow and basic medical terminology, Biology, understanding of Laboratory Medicine, anatomy and physiology, or equivalent exposure to these topics
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of personal computer applications
In compliance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commision (NRC) criminal background check and fingerprinting may be needed for the position, based on assigned duties
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
Associate's Degree -OR- Bachelor's Degree in Science
Courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology
Coursework in Leadership or equivalent experience
Certification from a Clinical Laboratory Assistant Program OR
Phlebotomy program with one (1) year of phlebotomy related experience - OR-
Three (3) years related experience
Certification from an approved government agency or nationally recognized professional organization (ASCO, NCA, etc.)
Industry related experience in a high volume, acute care setting
Three (3) years Phlebotomy, medical assisting, research, clinical laboratory experience, or certification
Job experience in specimen collection, specimen preparation and equipment operation, pneumatic tubes system and other laboratory equipment
